Climate Change Island

Oil and Gas companies have dug canals for over 50 years speeding up the saltwater intrusion in the marsh prairie surrounding the island. Photo courtesy Pete Muller

Before the ring levee was built water flooded the yards for every high tide. Yards, trees, animals, and gardens were destroyed by salt water. Photo courtesy Chantel Comardelle

The only road leading to the Island gets covered during storm events and strong south winds. The road was covered following the landfall of Hurricane Laura in Lake Charles, LA August, 2020. Photo courtesy Chantel Comardelle

The Island road has been doomed from its conception. The road was built across the marsh prairie, not the natural land bridge. The marsh began to erode as the salt water crept farther inland. The road now has open water on either side. Photo courtesy Pete Muller.

Massive fish kills occur due to lack of oxygen in the water. The Gulf Of Mexico has a yearly dead zone that creates kills. Photo courtesy Nathan Jessee
